The Spalted Outie
$75.00
Spalted wood is our FAVORITE and specialty. It’s a natural process in which science creates amazing unique art. We designed these “Outie” frames with a wide bevel across the face of the frame to showcase the spalting process as it moves through the inner layers of a piece of wood.
What is spalting?
When a tree is weakened or dying, fungus naturally begin to decompose the wood. The fungi spread through the wood, they digest the sugary tissue fibers of the tree, creating pigmentation and dark black lines called ‘Zone Lines’. These lines are border walls, erected by a species of fungus to protect its food source from competing fungus in the tree. Sometimes the fungus it is competing with is an older version of itself!! SCIENCE IS SO COOL!
Sugar Maple, AKA Acer Saccharum, is the most successful wood to capture this process as its strength and durability can withstand the Spalting process, while its light white color offers the perfect palette to showcase pigmentation and Zone Lines.
