The Flamed Outie

$75.00

Our NEW “Outie” frames are designed to showcase the character of spalting as it moves through the inner layers of a tree.  The red in these frames is all natural, made from flamed Boxelder (Acer negundo)- a species of Maple in the Soapberry family. This specific stock of Boxelder Maple has vibrant red spalting, a natural process caused by fungus.

What is Spalting?

Spalting is a natural phenomenon that occurs when fungus colonize the tissue fiber of wood, creating pigmentation and stunning character. Coloring and spalting patterns vary depending on the species of fungus and the species of wood.

The rich reds present in spalted Boxelder are unique to the Boxelder tree, a rare recipe created by Cerambycidae beetles infecting the tree with the fungus Fusarium reticulatum.  This pigmentation is not seen in any other tree species and is often nicknamed ‘Flaming Boxelder’ or ‘Candy Boxelder.’
