Featured Artist: Lizzy Gass

Featuring artists as unique as the woods we source is very rewarding, after all, what fun is making art frames out of cool wood without cool art to put inside them?

We are proud to feature one of our favorite artist’s Lizzy Gass, who creates fantastical illustrations that convey the same magic and wonder we search for in the woods we use.

Lizzy’s work is inspired “by a childhood spent reading fairytales and sci-fi books, building forts, and playing in the woods.“ Her ink and watercolor prints are filled with whimsical details and evoke feelings of childhood curiosity and exploration.

These featured art prints: Sasquatch (bigfoot) Nessie (Loch Ness Monster) and the elusive Jackalope imitate detailed field reports from the natural journal of an intrepid scientist. Lizzy’s love for these these infamous cryptids came from “growing up exploring the forests and lakes of the Pacific Northwest,” a natural landscape rich with sublime awe.

You can purchase each one separately, or collect the trio as a set of magical specimens.  Each print comes preserved inside a rare wood frame, your choice of either Flamed Boxelder or Spalted Maple.

Flamed Boxelder Frame: Boxelder, Acer negundo, is a species of Maple in the Soapberry family. Red flames occur when the tree is under distress, typically after attacks from Boxelder beetles.

Spalted Sugar Maple Frame: Spalting is a natural process in which science creates amazing unique art.  When a tree begins to die, fungus naturally begin to decompose the wood.  They travel through the tissues of the wood and begin digesting sugars, creating pigmentation and dark black lines called zone lines.  These lines-or barriers- are erected by fungus to protect their food source from competing fungus in the tree.   When the wood is harvested and dried, the fungus dies off, leaving behind an incredible canvas of unique character.

NOTE: We source our woods from small mills that work with locally fallen trees and believe in responsible land management. Every frame is crafted with care from hand selected boards that preserve the curious details and life story of the tree they come from. Natural oils and wax seal and protect the wood, no stains or dyes are used. Frame received may not be the exact frame pictured. Each frame is one of a kind and will be similar to those in photos.  All frames made with love and care.
